ZHOSTOVO

This art form has its origins in the early nineteenth century, in the village of Zhostovo near Moscow in Russia.  At first papier-mâché articles were painted in oils with scenery and flowers, then the artists began to paint on metal trays which they do to this day.  Usually on a dark background, the beautifully layered flowers appear to glow as if under a spotlight.  Each tray is unique.
